So you’re not sure how your company would deploy the RBA or if your network has a need of custom configurations? Let’s look at some basic network configurations and see if we can help you sort this out quickly.

Most of our RBA deployments fall into the category of a basic SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) design. We have outlined below a few of these scenarios to help make it easier for you to discuss your deployment needs, don’t worry we’ll make this easy for you. For now though, let’s just try to figure out what your scenario looks like. Which network scenario looks like your network, and which way do you want it to look afterwards?

 

Typical SOHO Network v1

This image represents a typical SOHO network where the Wireless Router is a combination Wireless Router/Modem that is typically provided by a Cable or DSL provider. All computer connections are made directly to the Router. WAN addressing is delivered via DHCP or Static IP from the ISP and all network traffic passes through this one device for connectivity to the Internet. A switch is sometimes also installed between the Router and the computers to add additional port connections.

This image represents a typical SOHO network where the Wireless Router is installed in conjunction with a Modem. This type of setup is very common in T1-3 setups but is also used in some Cable/DSL/Satellite type installations. All computer connections are made directly to the Router. WAN addressing is delivered via DHCP or Static IP from the ISP to the modem and a DHCP or Static IP gateway IP is passed to the Router, all network traffic passes through Router to the Modem for connectivity to the Internet. A switch is sometimes also installed between the router and the computers to add additional port connections.

Adding the RBA

Now let’s look at some scenarios where we have added in the RBA to some basic network configurations so you can determine what your network will look like with the RBA in place. The first step here though is to understand the RBA’s ports and default settings of those ports. Then let’s look at some setup scenarios.

Port Usage

  • Console: This port is used for manual configuration of the RBA via Command Line Interface. This port will only be used by AS or High Level Network Engineers that thoroughly understand the language of this Router and as such is capped off by default when the unit is shipped. Recommended configuration is always through the GUI via a LAN port.
  • USB: The USB ports are typically used for loading of the O/S via a thumb drive and as such are not set for user interface at this time. Future development scenarios will potentially include using these ports for a USB connected network printer.
  • Port1-WAN: This port is connected to your ISP’s Modem/Router and by default is configured to receive its WAN address via DHCP from that device.
  • Port2-LAN: This is the first LAN port for your network. It is typically where you will plug your LAN’s Router into the RBA. By default this port is set to a static IPv4 Address of 10.42.100.1 and the RBA’s DHCP server will pass network addresses to devices plugged into it within a Class C/24 bit (255.255.255.0) address within the scope of 10.42.100.100-10.42.100.200. Addresses outside this scope can be used for static addresses.
  • Port3-LAN1: This is the second LAN port for your network. It is used when you wish to utilize multiple subnets in your LAN. By default this port is set to a static IPv4 Address of 10.42.101.1 and the RBA’s DHCP server will pass network addresses to devices plugged into it within a Class C/24 bit (255.255.255.0) address within the scope of 10.42.101.100-10.42.101.200. Addresses outside this scope can be used for static addresses.
  • Port4-LAN2: This is the third LAN port for your network. It is used when you wish to utilize multiple subnets in your LAN. By default this port is set to a static IPv4 Address of 10.42.102.1 and the RBA’s DHCP server will pass network addresses to devices plugged into it within a Class C/24 bit (255.255.255.0) address within the scope of 10.42.102.100-10.42.102.200. Addresses outside this scope can be used for static addresses.
  • Port5-LAN3: This is the fourth LAN port for your network. It is used when you wish to utilize multiple subnets in your LAN. By default this port is set to a static IPv4 Address of 10.42.103.1 and the RBA’s DHCP server will pass network addresses to devices plugged into it within a Class C/24 bit (255.255.255.0) address within the scope of 10.42.103.100-10.42.103.200. Addresses outside this scope can be used for static addresses.
  • Port6-LAN4 or HA WAN: This is the fifth LAN port for your network. It is used when you wish to utilize multiple subnets in your LAN. By default this port is set to a static IPv4 Address of 10.42.104.1 and the RBA’s DHCP server will pass network addresses to devices plugged into it within a Class C/24 bit (255.255.255.0) address within the scope of 10.42.104.100-10.42.104.200. Addresses outside this scope can be used for static addresses.

HA-WAN: When dual Internet connections are to be utilized to provide WAN High Availability this port is configured to accept the second WAN interface. This type of configuration requires setup via Acceleration Systems Support staff.

If your current network model was “Standard SOHO Network v1” this is what your new configuration would look like after deploying the RBA. Just plug in the output from your ISP’s Modem/Router into Port1 and let it pass a DHCP address to the RBA. From there you can plug in your computers directly into the LAN ports of the RBA and pass internet traffic.

*Plugging directly into the RBA will give your computer a DHCP address from the RBA, this may be different than the scope of addresses you were using prior to the RBA and as such peripheral devices such as network printers and such will need to acquire new addresses as well.

If your current network model was “Standard SOHO Network v2” this is what your new configuration would look like after deploying the RBA. Just plug in the output from your ISP’s Modem/Router into Port1 and let it pass a DHCP address to the RBA. From there you LAN1 from the RBA to the Router’s WAN port and pass internet traffic.

This scenario is the most common and the easiest configuration in that your router will continue to use the same IP addressing for                                                                                                                                                                your network and no modifications are typically required.

 

Default Setup between Modem and Existing Router

Plug in an Ethernet cable on the LAN1 from the RBA to the router’s WAN port and pass internet traffic.

*This scenario is the most common and the easiest configuration. The router will continue to use the same
IP addressing for the network and modifications are not typically required.

 

Default Setup plus Network Switch

Plug in an Ethernet cable on the LAN1 from the RBA to the router’s WAN port and pass internet traffic.

*This scenario is the most common and the easiest configuration. The router will continue to use the same
IP addressing for the network and modifications are not typically required.

 

Adding an Access Point

Adding an access point does not require additional configurations since access point connections take place on the LAN side of the router. The router is still the gateway to the LAN connections and the RBA is the new gateway for the router.

By plugging in the access point to the RBA in front of the LAN Router, a wireless network could be set up on a completely different subnet segregated from the LAN network.
*Firewall rules are not in place on the default configuration so access between ports is still possible until a rule is created.

RBA as a LAN Router

Acceleration Systems Deployment ScenariosThe RBA6 can be used as a LAN router for the network so it is not necessary to have an additional router. By
default, the RBA will pass DHCP addresses to any device connected on the LAN ports, and the firewall can be
configured many ways. This is an inexpensive option for SOHO businesses that want enterprise class technology
for both routing and firewall protection.

Enterprise networks come in many various setups and configurations, this is just one simple one. These types of network are built and managed by IT staff dedicated to making all kinds of traffic work together for you. If you have a complex network such as this don’t worry. Installation is still as simple as installing the RBA between your Modem and Firewall or first Router. Your IT staff will know and understand exactly how to do this.
